Cooking holidays are a great way to become immersed in a culture
in an authentic--not to mention tasty--way. You mention Italy, a
land known for memorable fare. So I recommend that you contact a
London-based group called Tasting Places, which offers week-long
cooking holidays in five spots in Italy, as well in Thailand (trial
courses are being run in Bali and Greece). With Tasting
Places, you will have hands-on instruction, trips, tours, and
tastings--all with an informal ambiance. You get to stay in places
with local character, too, be it a farmhouse, a medieval hunting
lodge, or, in Thailand, a wooden bungalow on the beach.
And after your trip to Italy, consider trying another course in
France, a country also known for its fine cuisine. We here at Traveler
are great fans of Patricia
Wells, author of several cookbooks and the world-renowned "Food
Lover's Guide to Paris" and "Food
Lover's Guide to France." In Wells' classes--taught in Paris
and France--you'll visit outdoor markets and prepare cuisine using
a variety of regional specialties. Her classes fill up quickly and
are taught in small groups only, so you'll need to plan well in
advance.
