I
am a major
food lover. It is one of the reasons I became a nutritionist
in the first place. But I’ve also gone through periods of extreme
stress or emotional upset when I totally lost interest in food.
For me, those times meant I was too anxious or sad to enjoy life
fully or nourish
myself properly. Take steps to find out the root of your problem.
It could be a sign of depression, stress, or even a medical issue.
It is also possible that you are simply too busy to stop and smell
the proverbial roses.
Think back, maybe to your childhood
when you truly enjoyed food. What was your favorite food? What was
its aroma? What was its texture? Who were you with when you were
enjoying it the most? Once you tap into that sensory memory, try
to bring that experience to your next meal. Taking the time to enjoy
a good meal is far from a waste of time. It is one of life’s
true pleasures.
Loss
of appetite also can be a sign of depression. So, if your appetite
doesn’t return, you should consult with your physician and get to
the root of the problem.
What
is your opinion of the high-protein
low-carb diet? Is it the most effective way to lose weight and
keep it off?
There
are many versions of the high-protein
low-carb plan, some more extreme than others. Some diets eliminate
all breads, rice and other grains completely, and put stringent
limits on fruits and dairy products. Those plans are potentially
dangerous and often deficient in many B
vitamins, calcium and fiber. More moderate plans merely discourage
overeating refined grains and sugars. I have seen many people have
success with that approach because it gets them away from a diet
heavy in bagels, pasta, bread and sugary foods. The bottom line
is that whole grains, including oatmeal, brown rice, wholewheat
bread and wholegrain cereals provide many valuable nutrients. Don’t
go on any diet that bans these foods. But laying off sugary foods
and products made with white flour could help you lose weight and
keep it off.
My
boyfriend can’t stand low- fat anything and while he supports my
dieting, he can’t stand the cuisine that comes with it. Suggestions?
Just
because you choose to
reduce fat in your diet doesn’t mean your boyfriend has to eat
the same way . You can prepare dishes that have gravies, sauces
or cheese, but leave these high-fat extras off your portions. If
you make a roast chicken, take some breast meat for yourself but
remove the skin. Your boyfriend can eat the dark meat, skin or whatever
parts he likes If the main dish is high in fat, just take a small
portion for yourself and make veggies and salad the main part of
your meal. This way the overall meal will be leaner.
Also, your boyfriend may only think he doesn’t like low-fat cuisine
because many people wrongly equate it with rabbit food. Find a fabulous,
flavorful,
low-fat recipe and serve it to him without mentioning that it’s
healthier. He just might like it.
