Of
course, it's possible. Even monks live in this world. There is a
Zen saying, "Before enlightenment, till the soil and carry the water.
After enlightenment, till the soil and carry the water." The message
is that it's not the outer world but the inner world which changes
with enlightenment, bringing about a profound shift in the way we
view life, the world and our purpose in living. See life as something
to learn from and enjoy. Understand that the inner world is connected
with the source of all life and the wellspring from which we drink.
A friend of mine recently told me that I should learn to "connect
with my soul." I'm not quite sure what she meant or why it is important
to do that.
It is important because it is the soul that vivifies, radiates and
energizes the world surrounding us.. When we are out of touch with
our own souls, we also lose touch with the life force that gives
us a sense of purpose, meaning and connectedness. When we see soul
as a part of all that is living, we learn to use life circumstances,
i.e., relationships, as vehicles for soul growth or, as Matthew
Fox (Coleman for those who don't know you need to identify who he
is. If he has books, then mentioning that would be good because
you could link to Amazon)would put it, for growing soul. When our
relationships become vehicles for soul making, they take on a larger
purpose, which helps us to be less petty-less stuck in our own perspective
and more expansive-allowing and forgiving.
