I’m in a constant state of fear. Without reason, I obsess about losing my job. I worry about all kinds of things. How can I escape this?

I’m sorry you feel that way. You need to examine why you’re so fearful. Keep a journal of your thoughts to get more insight into why you’re afraid. Consider joining a therapy or support group and find a therapist to talk with about your fears so you can better understand their origins. Also, look for antidotes. Deepen your spirituality through meditation or join a spiritual community of your choice. This will help you build love and faith, which can counter your fears. In 12-step rooms we learn to surrender to fears and to stop fighting them by turning them over to our Higher Power.

The way I view myself is very different from how my friends describe me. I don’t like the fact that there seems to be a disconnection.

If you think you’re very different from the personality you are projecting, either your friends are not being truly honest and they really do see cracks in the armor but don’t want to hurt your feelings, or you need to integrate your inner world with your outer world a little more. Ask yourself these questions: Am I afraid to be myself? How could I be continuing a childhood pattern of hiding what’s inside of me? Do I think my friends, family and/or coworkers would reject me if they saw the real me? All of us experience what you’re sensing to some extent. And, feeling like a fraud or that you’re holding yourself back is not uncommon. However, if you have difficulty expressing who you really are or you believe you’re projecting a false image to others, try bringing the inner and the outer into greater harmony. That usually means therapy or a support group in which you can really open up and share your inner world.

I have been reading a bit about Buddhism. Buddhist principles interest me and make more sense to me than my own religion. I’m not sure if I should pursue it.

The only way you will know if it’s for you or not is by exploring it. Do some more reading and rely on your own direct experience. If Buddhism can be helpful in your life, you will sense it. Since the Baby Boomers came of age, Eastern religion has gained a great deal of popularity in America. Its flexibility, unassuming philosophy and accepting attitude, along with its practical advice on how to become closer to both self and God, appeal to many Americans who are seeking deeper relationships with their self and soul.
