The unique challenges of interfaith/intercultural relationships
By Joel Crohn
A quiet revolution has transformed the world of love. While it used
to be controversial when a Presbyterian married a Methodist or an
Italian American married an Irish American, today love respects
few boundaries. Technological advances have made the world more
accessible and brought together men and women from all corners of
the world. Interracial, interethnic, interfaith, and international
relationships are an integral part of our social landscape. Millions
of couples are re-writing the script of Romeo and Juliet. And though
cross-cultural romance doesn't need to be tragic, it still has unique
challenges. We need to face the fact that creating lasting, loving
relationships has become an increasingly difficult challenge for
all couples. Over commitment of time, the absence of extended family,
the erosion of religious and cultural traditions, and lack of community
have created more freedom for couples than support. And when we
add in extra layers of difference, there is more potential for misunderstanding
and conflict. Because mixed matches often start out as intensely
romantic relationships, chemistry can obscure important issues that
need to be addressed. It's as if couples are thinking, "We defied
tradition to be with each other, so we must really be in love."
But time is the gravity of love. What new love conceals, time reveals.
Here at Love-Track we'll help you to better understand the challenges
facing couples who bring together different worlds. We'll answer
your questions and share practical tools to assist you in developing
a lasting and satisfying relationship
